Recreational Activities

There are numerous activities available in Mountain View County and area - from lush golf courses to a staple of rural living - rodeo. There are also plenty of opportunities to quad, hike, bike and float / paddle. Keep checking back as we update new opportunities in addition to those below:


Carstairs Community Golf Course

An 18 hole course with Club House, banquet facilities, power carts and Pro Shop.

Didsbury Golf Course

9-hole community course where visitors are always welcome; part of a larger recreational facility that includes tennis courts.

Tooth of the Dogpound Creek Golf Course

18-hole course featuring elevated tee and greens and natural water hazards.

Eagle Hill/ Westward Ho/Sundre

Forest Heights Golf Course

Public are welcome to this 18-hole course, which offers a pro shop, licensed clubhouse, snack bar, putting greens, driving range and rentals.

Olds Central Highlands Golf Course

Public are welcome at this 18-hole course, which offers grass greens, grass driving range, and rentals. Come and enjoy!

A new 9 hole course developed in a scenic coulee located west of Olds Alberta one hour north of Calgary.

Water Valley

Water Valley Golf Course

18-hole, par 72, 6410-yard course offers triple tees, sand and water. Rated at 123 from the back tees, this course offers a true challenge to its golfers.

Olds - May & June

New to the area, the Alberta High School Rodeo Association will be holding its Junior High Finals in May 2017, and the High School Finals in June 2017 at the Olds Regional Exhibition grounds. Presented in partnership with the Town of Olds and Mountain View County, the event is organized by the Alberta High School Rodeo Association (AHSRA).


Water Valley - June

Events include Saddle bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, Calf Roping, Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing, Boys Steer Riding, Team Roping, Novice Horse Riding, and Junior Bull Riding. Sanctioned by the Foothills Cowboy Association (FCA).

Sundre - June

Events include Saddle bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, Tie Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Ladies Barrel Racing, Team Roping, Novice Events, Boys Steer Riding, and Wild Cow Milking. Sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) and hosted by the Sundre Rodeo and Race Association.

Dogpound- July

Held the third Wednesday of July, the Dogpound Rodeo is one of the most popular events in the area. Held at the Dogpound Rodeo Grounds, and sanctioned by the Foothills Cowboy Association (FCA).

Carstairs- July

Held the third weekend in July, events include Barrel Racing, Poles, Breakaway Roping, Keyhole, Calf Roping & Goat Tying. Held at the Carstairs Rodeo Grounds, and sanctioned by the Central Alberta Rodeo Association (CARA).

Didsbury - August

Held in conjunction with the annual fair, events include pancake breakfasts, a street parade downtown, beer gardens, bench show, muttin' bustin', an antique tractor pull. Sanctioned by the Foothills Cowboy Association (FCA) and hosted by the Didsbury Agricultural Society. 

Mountain View County Parks/Campgrounds

Westward Ho Park (62 acres) NW 33-32-4 W5M

  • Located on RR 44 South of Highway 27
  • Year round camping, un-serviced sites
  • 212 seasonal sites, 50 private sites, group camping area (up to 300 sites)
  • Fire wood sold on site
  • Playground area, and two ball diamonds

Water Valley Campground (12.3 acres) SW 2-30-5 W5M

  • Located on RR 52, 2.5 miles North of Water Valley
  • Seasonal Camping from May-October (weather permitting), unserviced sites
  • 2 separate camping areas separated by Little Red Deer River
  • 40 camping sites

Hillers Dam (53.2 acres) SE 13-32-29 W4M

  • Located on TWP 322 East of RR 10
  • Open seasonally
  • Day use area, no overnight camping
  • Picnic areas and walking trails
  • Annually stocked with Rainbow Trout by Alberta Environment & Sustainable Resources Development
  • No Charge for Access

William J. Bagnall Wilderness Park (34.7 acres) NW 30-29-5 W5M

  • Located off of HWY 579 west of RR 60
  • Open seasonally
  • Day use area only
  • 1.2km Hiking Trails, Picnic areas and Playground
  • Historical Skunk Hollow site
  • No Charge for Access

Winchell Lake (40 acres) NE-3-29-5-W5M

  • PLEASE NOTE: The access road is not maintained by Mountain View County and is not recommended for vehicles. Users are advised to either use at their own risk, or to park near the entrance and access the area by foot.
  • Located south of Water Valley on Rge Rd 52
  • East at T-intersection
  • Annually stocked with Rainbow Trout by Alberta Environment & Sustainable Resources Development
  • No charge for access
  • *A more rustic experience than other County day-use areas

Wayside Park N' Fish (8.44 acres) NE-33-29-3-W5M

  • PLEASE NOTE: This location is not actively maintained by Mountain View County
  • Located on Hwy 580 west of RR 33
