UPDATE (OCT 8/20): The gravel base is being laid starting October 7th. This is expected to take until October 16th with paving to follow. All dirt work, including topsoil placement, is expected to be completed by October 10th.
UPDATE (SEPT 16/20): Currently, the dirt work continues along the roadway, with the entire project span back up to two lanes. Base gravel is expected to begin in early October, and paving is scheduled to begin by mid-October if weather conditions allow. Telus phone line outages should be reported to James Crozier at the County office at 403-335-3311 or directly to Telus at 1-800-463-3633. In addition, Mountain View County’s planned culvert installation on RR 54 has been moved to the 2021 road program. The County has also applied dust control measures on the gravel roadways currently serving as detour routes.
UPDATE (SEPT 9/20): A portion of Bergen Road between Range Road 50 and Highway 760 will be restricted to a single lane for approximately one week starting Sept. 9th. Please follow all signage and flaggers direction. Expect delays.
UPDATE (SEPT 1/20): The closure planned for Range Road 54 between Township Roads 320 and 324 has been moved to the 2021 road program. RR 54 will remain open to local traffic and other motorists.
UPDATE: A portion of Township Road 320 (Bergen Road) between RR 53 and RR 53C (west of the bridge) has been re-opened but remains under construction and subject to delays.
OVERVIEW: The entire project area (see map below) remains under construction, meaning at times a low quality surface, delays and single lane traffic. The project is a complete rebuild of the surface so varying surface quality will mean accessibility for certain vehicles might be difficult during certain stages.
Motorists who do not live in the Bergen area but who use the roadway as an alternate access to Sundre are asked to avoid the area and use Highways 22 and 27 for the duration of construction.
Access to popular destinations including Davidson Park and the Bergen Community Hall will be highly impacted for the duration of the construction, as will residents and producers along the roadway. The County and its contractors regret the ongoing inconvenience.
Access further into the area west of Bergen is best done using alternate routes. If coming from the south, turn west onto the Burnt Timber Road (Twp Rd 304), north on to the Fallen Timber Trail (RR 53) and then west on Twp Rd 320 to the destination. From the north, head south along Hwy 760, west along Twp Rd 322 and then south along RR 55 or RR 60. Please note that some of these are gravel surfaces so please drive carefully.
If you are accessing the Bergen community directly expect delays and construction conditions.
Construction is expected to continue until well into the Autumn season, with subsurface and road base rebuild expected to continue through September with plans for paving to commence in October, weather pending.

Bergen Road Construction Project FAQ’s
The current construction project on the Bergen Road (Township Road 320) is a nearly $10 million upgrade and repaving of the road between Highway 22, west to Range Road 53. The construction phase of the project began in June 2020 and is expected to continue until the end of October, weather pending. Here are some frequently asked questions regarding this project:
WHEN WAS THIS PROJECT APPROVED?
The project was approved by Mountain View County Council as part of the 2020 road construction schedule during the 2020 Budget deliberations.
WILL THE ROADWAY BE CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION?
The affected portion of Twp Rd 320 is not expected to be closed other than for short stints for equipment moves or other temporary situations. Delays, including single lane traffic through the construction zone is expected to continue for the duration of the project.
The County knows this is inconvenient to many residents of the area and motorists who access the Bergen community and, along with the project contractor, are attempting to mitigate the disruption as much as possible.
IS THIS PROJECT THE START OF A RING ROAD AROUND SUNDRE?
No. This is a County road upgrade for improved conditions, access and safety. There are no plans to extend the construction to include a bridge across the Red Deer River at any time.
WHAT DOES THE CONSTRUCTION ENTAIL?
The project includes widening the road to a higher standard, improving the side slopes, changing the grade-line for better visibility and safety, along with paving to ensure a surface designed to last longer.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON DAVIDSON PARK?
Davidson Park, a County-owned day-use recreation facility, will remain open and accessible during the construction. The overall project also features planned improvements to the park’s entranceway.
As part of the road widening, the trail that follows the Fallen Timber Creek to the east to a picnic area has been temporarily disturbed to allow for the appropriate sloping for the roadway. This area is part of the County’s road allowance which is a portion of land set aside for access and road improvements. Once the project is completed the trail will be replaced for park users.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF CONSTRUCTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT?
The County and the contractor are trying to reduce, wherever possible, the impact on the local landscape. Some disturbances and vegetation removal are required but are limited in scope and reclamation work will be done where possible. All permits and approvals required by Alberta Environment have been secured by the County.
