The 2021 Capital Project Budget of $10,609,735 (see link below) was approved by Mountain View County Council at its regular meeting on December 9, 2020. In addition, an interim operating budget of $36,052,000 was also approved by Council to allow for continuation of County business in the new year until the actual 2021 operating budget is approved in the spring.
The number for the interim budget is arrived at using the 2020 operating budget and by adding known adjustments to line items that have changed for the upcoming year.
According to the Municipal Government Act, the municipality is required to have its budget in place for the upcoming year before the end of current year. Approving an interim budget has been a standard business practice for Mountain View County for many years, as has approving the capital projects budget.
By having the capital budget in place, it allows the County to issue tenders for larger projects early in the new year, meaning it will access the most competitive pricing for the approved project work. The majority of the large capital projects pertain to the County’s road network.
Deliberations around the 2021 Operating Budget will continue into the new year as more information becomes available to fine tune the budget items, including the County’s assessment report, the school requisition from the province, and more.
