Year Round Care
Keeping roads well maintained, safe and accessible is the Department's
priority year round. Mountain View County operates with 10 Road
Maintenance Districts managed by full time (year round) operators, 1
seasonal operator and contract graders. Each is responsible for
approximately 130 miles of gravel road and 70 miles of chip sealed
roads
Winter Maintenance adopts a new look
With the daily commute becoming a common feature of life in Mountain
View County, Operational Services has reviewed winter maintenance
service levels, and will be instituting changes to address increased
traffic and commuter traffic traveling on County roads early in the
morning and later into the evening:
Mobilized response to the storm event location
Mountain View County will now mobilize equipment to respond to
storm events wherever they may be occurring within the County. Often
times winter storm events do not affect the whole County at once; so
this approach allows Operational Services to maximize their resources,
and move crews throughout the County to keep roads clear during snowfall
events.
Focused response on collector network
Mountain View County's primary collector roads are the
lifeline that keeps commercial emergency and school traffic on the go.
In recognition of this, Operational Services crews will focus on keeping
the major collector routes open during a storm event; moving on to minor
collectors/ school bus routes; industrial roads; and all other County
roads and subdivisions (in that order of priority).

24/ 7 day patrol and response
Mountain View County is committed to ensuring that motorists have safe
passage through the County by providing 24 hour coverage and patrols
during winter storm events.
Earlier response to address commuters and bus routes- Four
trucks strategically placed throughout Mountain View County will be
assigned to patrol and sand County roads during a winter storm event,
starting as early as 4 a.m. This will ensure that travelers on primary
collector routes will be able to make their journey in the best possible
conditions. A second County crew will commence work at 7 a.m. or
earlier; with crews rotating to cover off the morning, afternoon and
evening commute- concluding operations at 8 p.m. or later during a major
snowfall event.
Primarily truck response during snow events
In an effort to better utilize County resources that are best suited
for the situation at hand, Mountain View County has broken their storm
response up into three stages:
- Pre-event- Concentrated anti-icing efforts on the County Road Network
- Event- Snow plowing using 10 County plow trucks; with an
additional four trucks on contract to Alberta Highway Services for the
maintenance of primary and secondary highways within the county. Graders
will be used for cleanup or to address severe drifting as required.
- Post-event- Cleanup after the event includes subdivision plowing
by graders after the event, subdivision plowing and winging and clean-up
of road shoulders.
The County uses a process of wetting sand with calcium for winter sanding – this reduces the usage of salt; speeds up de-icing and creates a safer driving surface.
To ensure prompt snow removal on secondary and access roads, residents are reminded to have mailboxes and signage well distanced from road entranceways so equipment can move freely. The County’s priority is keeping major public roads clear of snow and ice and ensuring transportation networks are operating at peak capacity. Blocked private laneways and access roads are treated on a secondary priority basis, however the County is pleased to provide references for private snow removal on lanes and private properties.
