Each year, Mountain View County’s Assessment Department prepares a valuation of your property based on standards and criteria directed by Alberta Municipal Affairs. Your property value along with the tax rates, that are determined as part of the budget process, determine the amount of taxes due for a given property. In mid to late Spring you will get a combined Assessment / Tax Notice which indicates your property value and the amount of your taxes.

Taxes are due in full by September 15th of the same year. A late penalty charge of 2% will apply after this date and if taxes are still outstanding on November 1 a further 10% penalty is applied. In some years, the deadline is postponed and late penalty charges are reduced in the event of exceptional circumstances for some assessments. Remember! You can now pay your taxes electronically. You can also pay your taxes via a mailed in check or by coming into the County office during regular office hours (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday).

Want to make paying taxes a little easier?
Consider a monthly payment plan…

Paying your taxes in one lump sum can be challenging on your cash flow. We’d like to help.

Mountain View County offers a monthly payment option that provides the opportunity to delay paying 1/3 of your taxes beyond the September 15th due date. This 1/3 balance will be withdrawn in four equal monthly payments which will be drawn from your account on the last day of the month beginning September 30th. The remaining 2/3rd of your tax bill will be due on September 15th as per your tax notice.

How were the 2007 Tax Rates Set?
  • The County’s tax assessment base has increased 21 per cent from the 2006 budget year. This means, our tax requirements (the amount of money required to be generated from tax revenue to deliver County services) is now being spread over a larger base of rate payers

  • The larger tax base is the result of both new construction and the increase in the market value of existing property

  • The Combined Tax Rate is what you will see on your residential tax notice and it includes two main parts - The Municipal Tax Rate which is set by the County and the Education Tax Rate which is set by the Province. You will also see minor rates for seniors' housing, waste management and EMS Services.

  • In 2007, The Combined Tax Rate decreased from 2006 levels. This decrease will help offset the large assessment value increases which some properties experienced since the 2006 tax year.

How do 2007 Tax Rates Impact You?
Here’s an example (fictitious) that illustrates how this all boils down…

Meet Bob and Nancy - County ratepayers with a home that was assessed a value of $210,000 in 2006. This year (2007) the market value of their home increased by 22% to $256,000.

Even though the Combined Tax Rate has stayed the same, Bob and Nancy will experience an $91 increase in their tax bill.
