Congratulations! You're a Councillor! Now what?

It was a lot of work to get elected, but the work has only just begun.

As any Councillor will tell you, the moment you're elected you're on the job 24/7/365. Councillors are the public face of the County, and as such can expect to be approached on Council business any time, any place. Constituents will phone you at home, and will even stop your spouse with concerns/ requests/ issues / questions to be brought to the Councillor's attention.

Effective time management is essential in dealing with both personal and public demands that come with being a member of council. And the demands on your time are extensive:

As a Councillor you will be required to attend a several meetings per year. Council meets at least three times per month for Regular Council, two times a month for Policies and Priorities Committee, and up to two times per month for Municipal Planning Commission. In addition to the Regular Council meetings, Councillors meet on average for 6-8 days to review and establish policy directions or the County's capital and operating budgets.

For more information, click here to read "Now That You've Been Elected - A Handbook for Elected | Councillors"

Council is also expected to sit on council or issue based committees. On average, each councillor serves on a dozen committees full-time throughout the year - add another dozen or more to that list if you're the Reeve. While most committees meet on a monthly basis, some involve a time commitment of many hours per month, along with participation in various forms of public consultation

Councillors must set time aside to review agendas, and other supporting materials in advance of each meeting they attend. In the case of Regular Council, agendas can from range from 100 to 800 pages in length, depending upon the issues at hand.

You are also involved with a number of associations such as the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, which lobby provincial and federal levels of government on the municipality's behalf.

The time spent as County Councillor will be an adventure, with both pleasant and not-so-pleasant experiences. In general though, you will have the satisfaction of serving your neighbours and your municipality, as well as the knowledge that you have made a real difference in your community. Best of luck to you.
