Mountain View County has received a few inquiries regarding Maclean’s Magazine’s recently released Canada’s Best Communities rankings and tool (available via internet search) where the County was ranked 415th out of the communities selected for the rankings.
While the County disagrees with the rankings, it recognizes that they are representative of the subjective methodology used to accumulate and weigh the rankings. It is the County’s opinion that the rankings are indicative of the types of services most commonly found, and statistics typically tracked, in urban settings, thus the consistently lower rankings throughout the list of rural municipalities like Mountain View County.
Mountain View County is a fully rural municipality that prides itself on its rural and agricultural roots. The services used to accumulate points in the rankings, including health services and recreational amenities are provided to County residents through partnerships with the County’s partner urban municipalities, none of which appear in the selective rankings that examine only 415 or nearly 5,200 municipalities in Canada. Mountain View County values these relationships with our Urban Partners to collectively provide a regional approach to providing high quality of services that residents deserve with the rural quality of life that residents expect.
“While the rankings make for a fun and lively discussion we are confident that Mountain View County, in partnership with our urban neighbours, makes this one of the best regions to live, work and raise a family in the Country while pursuing the independent lifestyle most of our residents enjoy,” said Reeve Bruce Beattie. “Those residents, both long-term and new, have expressed time and again that they choose to live in the County due to its quiet, rural setting while having a quality road network to access urban centres for the services common to those municipalities. The County’s geographical location also has us straddling one of the busiest highways and rail lines in Canada and under an hour to one of the country’s busiest international airports.”
County officials appreciate the kind words of support received on social media from our residents, supporters and friends in our urban partner municipalities.
